The guy at the front desk is an awesome Greek guy who tells hilarious mother in law jokes and always wants to know where my grandfather is from. I would definitely return to this hotel because of the close proximity to downtown and it is the best value for the money. This hotel definitely has a lot of character.
The matresses in some of the rooms aren't that comfortable. Ask for room 102 with the new matresses.
The elderly staff were very friendly.
The bed was only slightly more comfortable than my floor. It is not possible to individually control the heat/air in each room. The carpet was dirty and the room had a funky odor. The TV was so old it was made before remote controls were invented.
The room was large, clean, smelled good, none of that musty old room odor, shower was large and clean, loved the tiles. If you are looking for a large, clean room I would say go for it, but ask for a room with new beds.
I have slept on ground more comfortable than the bed. I was in town for a juggling festival and did not get in the room till 1:30 am tired, sore and ready to sleep. However I did not sleep due to the bed, the sheets were clean. But since it was so late I did not ask for another room, mistake on my part which I soon regretted, I finally got up at nine and left, still tired and more sore.
Friendly staff. Had fridge, coffee pot--in room.
Limited parking at upper sections of rooms. Only four channels on tv
It was convenient to all the places I was going (I had my car, but was close enough to walk to many destinations), it was a bargain price, and although a bit rustic, it was certainly adequate for my needs. The staff was very friendly and helpful with directions and advice, and were genuinely concerned that you had a good stay. Also, there was a stoplight at the entrance, so it was easy to get in and out, even if you were making a left turn to get in. Great restaurant within walking distance for breakfast that the staff let me know about - The Corner Stone.
Although the maid service brought fresh towels every day, they didn't remake the bed. No biggie, as it was just myself this trip, but it would have been nice.
The room was big and cleaned everyday.
The tv had no guide to tell you which channel was what. There could have been a bit more of a verity for breakfast.
It was cheap.
The stinkbugs were kind of everywhere.
The staff were very friendly & helpful. I would stay there again when I come to Asheville again. We really enjoyed the Large pool.
I am a person that likes motels. I like to check in and be able to pull right up to my room. I always forget things in my car and like to have my car right outside my door. The Mountaineer in is very, very retro. The furniture, buildings, appliances, bathroom tiles, sink, and tvs are very old. Everything looked like it was from the 60'S. I like places like this. My wife and most other women I know don't like places like this. So if you are ok with clean but old furniture, bedding, structures, etc... this is a good place for the value. If you don't like these kinds of things I mentioned you would definitely want to get a room at a more modern place.
I wished the air conditioning was a little colder.
Location to downtown and the cool old atmosphere
Pitiful little breakfast, weak coffee, small pool, stained sheets
It was so disgusting that I asked for a refund. It was very rundown. There were several locals who were hanging out, half-dressed and drunk. They had no respect for the guests or their vehicles. The place should be closed.
Very outdated, both in the office procedures and in the room.
We really enjoyed the location. It was close to everything you need and only a few minutes from downtown!
Towels were clean. AC worked. Daily bagels were good. Wi-fi worked well. Kids loved the pool (but adults were IN the pool smoking cigarettes, that is disgusting! add to your pool rules that there is "No Smoking" INSIDE the pool)! TV's were old but worked just fine.
They need to replace the carpets and enforce the non-smoking. Rooms were only half made up daily, (i.e.: only one bed instead of two). The rooms reeked of smoke and mold.
It was a quaint place and with a few upgrades would be a nice place to stay. I didn't see any bugs and it was kind of clean considering it's age. The breakfast was very simple - coffee, bagels, etc., but it was ok. I didn't use the pool but it looked nice.
THE BEDS!! Sleeping on a torture rack would be the only way to describe them. I peeked in other rooms and the beds all seemed to be the same although we were told there were a few rooms with better mattresses but not in our room. We asked to change rooms and that only resulted in a worse bed but the room was bigger and a little nicer and we had to pay an additional charge because it was a "newer" room.
